Substance abuse   Substance abuse Disorders are viewed as primary, chronic diseases of brain reward, motivation,  memory  and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by other behaviors. Struggle with recovery? People who struggle with recovery often begin or continue using because they have underlying, or co-occurring symptoms related to  mental stress , negative moods, trauma-related symptoms or post trauma. Continued use also exacerbates the symptoms of these conditions. This can make remaining abstinent very difficult.
